ADVICES FOR TOURISTS

VISAS:

EU nationals holding valid passports are able to enter Bulgaria without visas. According to the adopted amendments foreigners are allowed to stay in Bulgaria for 90 days within a period of six months, reckoned from the date of the first entry. As the government is aligning Bulgaria's visa regime with EU standards, visas are dropped for the citizens of North Ireland, Canada, Australia, and Mexico.

Important Notice!
1.      Family members of the EU citizen, who do not have the nationality of EU Member State, enjoy the same rights of the EU citizens for their travel to Bulgaria. This is only in case they have a status of permanent residence in an EU country (ILR) and are travelling together or are going to Bulgaria to join (with the relevant documents) their family member(s) who is(are) already in the country.
2.      The holders of the following types of the British Passports need visas for travel to Bulgaria:
British Overseas Territories Citizen without Right to Abode
British Overseas Citizens
British Subjects without Right to Abode
British Protected Persons.


PASSPORT/ IDENTITY CARD:

Passports or Identity Card of nationals from EU must be valid for period of stay. Moreover, visitors should be prepared to show proof of valid medical insurance upon request.

DRIVING LICENSE AND TRAFFIC REGULATIONS:

National drivers' licenses are valid in Bulgaria.

HEALTH CARE:

There is no special epidemiologic danger in Bulgaria. You do not have to be inoculated. Private insurances for the stay in Bulgaria are advised for all of foreigners and transit tourists from the 1st of December 2001. European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is valid only in the public health care which quality leaves much to be desired.

CUTOMS REGULATIONS:

Visitors are obliged to abide by the EU regulations.

MONEY EXCHANGE:

Exchange money only in exchange offices where handling charges are not collected – the best way is to ask what sum you would get for the particular amount. On the 1st of July 1999 denomination of Lev was done. From the 1st of January 2000 only new currency is in the circulation: 1 Lev is equal 1000 old Lev. Old currency was completely withdrawn from the circulation, it could be exchanged only in banks.
